Whole Vehicle Type Approval

The content and actions in the following notes are not going to directly impact upon recovery operators in the short term but it may be useful information for the future.

Yet another European directive has winged its way to our shores and hit the Statute Book in April 2009.

Whole Vehicle Type Approval will, bu 2014, affect all vehicles (currently it only relates to cars and motor cycles) meaning that in order to register a vehicle, including recovery trucks, a certificate of conformity will be required by the DVLA.  Not my problem you say?  Well it might be if your body builder cannot issue the certificate of conformity and your nice new vehicle may not be ready when you expect it to be!

The technicalities of getting to the COC stage are almost irrelevant and not your direct concern, choosing a builder who is clued up on the process most certainly is.  If nothing else it will make life easier for you, which must always be a welcome opportunity.

Depending upon your particular vehicle requirements, they may not come into scope of the legislation until 2014 but failing to realise this, as the deadline dates approach may become a real issue for you.

VBRA has been educating its members for some 4 years on what is about to "hit" them.  Some are already well advanced with WVTA planning.

If you want to know more, by all means ask us or ask AVRO to ask us.  It's more important than you might at first think!
